Suzuki SV650 vs Yamaha MT-07: Which Should You Buy?
These are two of the most loved value twins ever made, and new riders cross-shop them endlessly. They are remarkably close: similar power, similar price, both A2-restrictable, both gloriously simple. The real difference is engine character and feel, a smooth V-twin versus a torquey parallel twin, plus a bit of weight and seat height. Here is the honest breakdown.

The smooth, forgiving one. A characterful 645cc V-twin that is famously predictable and easy to ride, with a lower 785mm seat that suits shorter riders. Often recommended as the friendliest first big bike. Less flashy, very dependable.

The lighter, livelier one. Yamaha's torquey CP2 parallel twin is punchy and addictive, and at ~184kg it is noticeably lighter and more flickable. The more exciting bike of the pair, with a slightly taller seat and, for 2026, a slightly higher price.

Where the SV650 wins
Forgiveness and fit. The 645cc V-twin is wonderfully smooth and predictable, the kind of engine that builds a nervous rider's confidence rather than testing it, and the lower 785mm seat lets more riders get a confident foot down. It is a touch more relaxed and planted than the MT-07, which is exactly why instructors and forums so often name it the ideal first big bike. If smooth manners and reach matter most, take the SV650.
Where the MT-07 wins
Weight and torque. At around 14kg lighter the MT-07 feels noticeably more flickable and eager, and its CP2 twin has a torquey, addictive low-end punch that makes it the more exciting bike to ride hard. The trade-offs are a slightly higher 2026 price, a slightly taller seat and an engine that is a touch livelier for a very nervous beginner, but for most riders that liveliness is the appeal.
Which should you buy?
Buy the SV650 if you want the smoothest, most forgiving ride, a lower seat, and that classic V-twin character. It is the safer pick for the most nervous new riders and shorter riders, and it will never feel like too much bike.
Buy the MT-07 if you want a lighter, livelier, slightly cheaper bike with a torquey punch, and the 805mm seat works for you. Honestly, both are superb and hard to regret; the choice comes down to whether you prefer smooth-and-planted or light-and-eager, so ride both if you can before deciding.
